Early praise

“Having known Rabbi Shmuel Veffer for over a decade, I have long admired his ability to combine analytical precision with intellectual honesty couched in compassion. In Dialogue with the Enemy, he brings those qualities to a subject that often generates more heat than light. Rather than shouting across ideological divides, Rabbi Veffer shepherds readers through a real conversation, testing claims against history, logic, and lived experience. I knew when we discussed this book over a glass of wine in Jerusalem that it would be a thoughtful, challenging, and highly relevant work. It is. Read it. More importantly, share it.”

Joseph Kerr, Journalist, White House Special Media Press Corps

“I admire Rabbi Shmuel Veffer for having the great sense to engage this conversation with Angela at all, and to do so in as thoughtful a way as he did. His narrative reflects his thoughts at the time which add important dimension. Hopefully this will get in the hands of many Angelas and others who just don’t have all the facts.”

Jonathan Feldstein, President, Genesis 123 Foundation

About the book

After October 7, an American mother and activist posted a blunt declaration: Israel does not have the right to exist. Rabbi Shmuel Veffer, a former systems analyst who has taught Torah for more than thirty years, sent her a private message instead of a rebuttal. What followed was a weeks-long conversation, sometimes heated and sometimes surprisingly personal, that put every one of her claims to the test.

Dialogue with the Enemy is the story of that conversation, told in her own words and his. You will see:

  • How words become weapons: why “genocide” and “apartheid” so often end a conversation instead of starting one
  • How empathy gets selective: why some suffering moves activists to action while Jewish suffering is explained away
  • How history gets rewritten: what the record shows about Hebron in 1929, the Oslo years and the 2005 Gaza withdrawal
  • How to test the numbers: what the casualty, nutrition and aid figures actually say, with sources in the notes
  • How to answer: practical tools, Socratic and Talmudic, for your own conversations

Rabbi Veffer writes from inside the story. His father survived the Holocaust in hiding in Holland. His son-in-law spent months recovering the remains of October 7 victims. His family lives under the same rockets the activist dismissed from six thousand miles away.

This is not a book of slogans. It is a memoir of one conversation: what happens when the language of progressive activism meets the reality of Jewish survival. It is written for anyone who has faced these claims at work, on campus or at the family table, and wants to answer with clarity and calm.
